Thomas Dalton Miller III

Thomas Dalton Miller III, 82, of Burlington NC, passed away early in the morning on April 28, 2017. He died peacefully in his sleep at the Hospice Center of Alamance-Caswell County with his sweetheart of 65 years, Jane, by his side.

He was born on November 19, 1934 and was the only child of Mildred and Thomas Donald Miller of Mooresville NC, both deceased.

T.D. will be remembered as a pioneer in the paging and mobile communications industries. After graduating from NC State University with a degree in Electrical Engineering in 1957, he joined Bell Laboratories in Burlington and left in 1968 to start T.D. Miller Mobile Communications, Inc. He was an amateur radio enthusiast all his life, receiving his license (W4SWB) at the age of 12. T.D. was an avid pilot for much of his life and cherished spending time with family and friends at Lake Norman. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Burlington for over 50 years.

He is survived by his loving wife Jane Edwards Miller and three children: Lynn Miller Dula (Fred) of Hilton Head, SC, Teresa Miller Barbour of the U.S. Virgin Islands, Robert Bruce Miller (Deborah) of Atlanta, GA. T.D. and Jane recently lost their son Donald Stewart Miller, who died on April 15, 2017 after battling cancer.

In addition to his wife and children, T.D. is survived by ten grandchildren: Stewart Dula, Caroline Dula, Sumter Barbour, Miller Barbour, Christopher Miller, Claire Borchardt, Connie Miller, Jane Miller, Virginia Miller, and Elizabeth Miller, as well as two great grandchildren, Aubrey and Austin.

A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Burlington on Tuesday, May 2, 2017 at 2 p.m. The family will receive friends at the church following the service.
