William Garner Roberts Jr

William Garner Roberts, Jr., 85, died Monday, May 3, 2021 at Alamance Regional Medical Center.

Bill was born January 25, 1936 in Rockingham County to the late William Garner Roberts and Anne Price Roberts. He held both undergraduate and professional degrees from UNC, Chapel Hill. He was a veteran of the US Army (military intelligence). He worked as a Planning and Development Consultant for a number of public agencies and private companies for some fifty years and retired as manager of a family real estate partnership. His employers and clients included NC state agencies; City of Columbia, SC; UNC administration; NC State University; several NC and SC cities and counties; and multiple architectural, engineering, and planning firms. He was an active volunteer serving on a variety of human service boards and was Rockingham County chairman of the NC 2000 program, president of the SC professional planners chapter, and Homeowners Association boards chairman.

Married to Anna C. Tilson in 1957, they raised four children and cared for a number of foster children until her death in 1986. He married Betty Jean Clodfelter in 1987, after which they lived together in Burlington, Stoney Creek, and Twin Lakes retirement community. He was of the Christian faith.

In addition to his parents and his first wife, he was preceded in death by his son, Matthew T. Roberts, and two sisters, Joan R. Benton and Marjorie Roberts. He is survived by his wife, Betty C. Roberts; daughters, Laura R. Steen(Michael) of Greensboro and H. Beth Roberts of Thomasville; his son, Michael L. Roberts of Burlington; grandsons, Tyler Steen and Luke Steen of Greensboro; and his sister, Faye Roberts of Greensboro.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
