William Robert "Bill" Moore

December 11, 1946 ~ April 9, 2021 (age 74) 74 Years Old

Obituary

William Robert “Bill” Moore, 74, of Graham passed away unexpectedly at his residence on Friday, April 9, 2021.

A native of Guilford County, he was the son of Robert Ashburn Moore and Muriel Glosson Moore, both deceased.

Mr. Moore was a veteran of the U. S. Army Reserve. He trained at Fort Polk, Louisiana and was in the
U. S. Army Company B. Third Battalion. Bill was in the military police and received the Sharpshooter Badge.

Mr. Moore graduated from Southern Alamance High and then N. C. State University with a degree in Applied Mathematics. His over 30-year career began in 1970 with Western Electric Company, continued with AT&T, and ended with his retirement from Lucent Technologies in 2001. He started as a systems analyst, was a self-taught computer programmer, and worked many large government jobs as a Systems Integrations manager. He spent a year overseas in Mannheim, Germany on a government job for Lucent Technologies in 1991.

After retirement, Bill did freelance computer work, worked as a census supervisor, was President of a HOA in Myrtle Beach, worked as property manager, and worked in retail technology sales and car sales.

Bill was the ultimate renaissance man and most areas of knowledge were self-taught. He could work in a butcher shop, paint, roof a house, put up siding, renovate a home and replace or repair most anything under the hood of a car. But on his softer side, he could also quilt, run an embroidery machine, take and develop his own photos and do needlepoint. In his younger days, he loved riding his motorcycles, fishing, basketball and softball and was an avid slalom water-skier and photographer. Back in high school his love of his playing tennis led him to meet with the Principal who agreed to start the first tennis team at Southern High school.

The one skill Bill did not possess was the ability to stay idle. In his later years, whether it was raising goats, learning to make soap from their milk, shearing his sheep, or deciding to get fifty chickens (because, yes, he did love the good eggs!), Bill was constantly learning something new and trying something different.

Survivors include five children, Daniel Moore (Kim) of Elon, Suzanne Cranford (Jeff) of Bracey, VA, Michael Moore of Littleton, Will Moore and Sam Moore, both of Greensboro; seven grandchildren, Ally Russell, Isabel, Isaac, Jack, Ella, and Lily; sister, Jean Moore Garvin (Vernon) of Bassett, VA; and his two loyal dogs, Wolf and Ivy. He was preceded in death by a brother, Steven D. Moore.

A memorial service will be conducted at the Rich & Thompson Chapel in Graham on Thursday, April 15, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. by Rev. Susan Spangenberg with the family receiving friends 30 minutes prior to the service.
