William Henry McCormick

William Henry McCormick, age 72, passed away October 7, 2018 at the Memory Care Center at Twin Lakes Community in Burlington. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend and educator whose spirit remains in the hearts of those who loved him.

Bill was an educator for over 30 years. Most of his education career was spent with the Orange County Schools where he served as an elementary school principal for many years. Living by the adage, ‘Your attitude determines your altitude’, he inspired a positive approach to living and learning in many students, fellow educators, family and friends. He lived life with a positive attitude and good sense of humor, even as he experienced the slow, relentless loss of his abilities due to early-onset Alzheimer’s disease.

Bill is preceded in death by his parents, James and Martha McCormick, and his brother Jim. He is survived by his wife Joan, daughter Emily Lagas-Rivera and her husband Matthew, son Jonathan McCormick and his wife Alisa; his grandchildren Simon Lagas-Rivera, Hadley McCormick, and William McCormick. Also surviving are his sisters Frances McClintock, Jane Snead, and Gail Anderson; his brother Fred McCormick, and many other family and friends.

The family wishes to express special gratitude to all those who assisted and supported Bill during the Alzheimer’s phase of his life’s journey. Those include staff, friends, and volunteers at the Soltys Adult Day Health Program in Hillsborough, NC, the Harbor Adult Day Program, and the Memory Care Center at Twin Lakes Community in Burlington, NC.

A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at The May-Foley Chapel, Twin Lakes Community, 3801 Wade Coble Drive, Burlington, NC on October 13, 2018 at 2:00 in the afternoon.
