William "Bill" Gregory

June 2, 1948 ~ July 3, 2019 (age 71)


Mr. William “Bill” Gregory, 71, of Burlington passed away at his residence surrounded by his family on Wednesday, July 3, 2019 following a two year courageous battle with cancer.

A native of Anderson, SC, he was the loving husband of Frieda K. Gregory, who survives and the son of William C. Gregory and Mildred Arlene Berdahl Gregory, both deceased.

In addition to his wife of the home, survivors include a son, William Davis Gregory and wife Jennifer of Burlington; daughter, Melissa Gregory Long and husband Brian of Graham; five grandchildren, Luke, Austin and Laci Gregory and Delaney and Brianna Long; and one sister, Marcia G. West of Stem, NC. He was preceded in death by a sister, Karen G. Thompson.

Bill was a U. S. Army veteran serving during the Vietnam War. He was a retired Major with the Burlington Police Department and also worked for the Alamance County Sheriff’s Department. He particularly enjoyed his role as a firearms instructor for many years. Bill was an active member of the Burlington Police Club and the Mountain View Ruritan Club. He was a member of Bellemont United Methodist Church and the Methodist Men. He also volunteered many hours at E.M. Holt Elementary School with the Backpack Program and the school store.

Bill’s passion was his wife of 50 years and his grandchildren. He rarely missed a ballgame, dance competition or awards ceremony for his grandchildren and was their biggest fan. He loved eating out, shopping and never turned down a corner slice of birthday cake. He could be found most mornings or Monday nights eating with friends.

The family will receive friends at Rich & Thompson Funeral and Cremation Service in Burlington on Friday, July 5, 2019 from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Other times they will be at the residence.

The funeral service will be conducted at Bellemont United Methodist Church on Saturday, July 6, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. by Rev. Farron Duncan. Burial will follow in Alamance Memorial Park.
