Obituary

Virgil Holcomb Christian passed away on Tuesday, April 26, 2022, after bravely battling Parkinson’s, surrounded by loved ones in Burlington, North Carolina.  He was born in Lexington, NC and grew up in Mount Airy, graduating from Mount Airy High School in 1954. He was honored that same year as Class President and “Mr Mount Airy.”

Virgil went on to graduate from UNC Chapel Hill, while working at The Carolina Inn, earning a B.S. in Business Administration. During the summer of his junior year, he met his bride-to-be while they were working at the Jersey shore.

After graduating from UNC, Virgil entered the Navy as an Officer, working on an aircraft carrier for 6 years, leaving as a Lieutenant.  He went on to work for DuPont in sales for 37 years, in 1988 being honored with the esteemed DuPont Marketing Excellence Award.

Virgil and Gillan lived in Pittsburgh for 39 years. He was a member of the Pittsburgh Field Club, serving on their Board for many years.  Some of his favorite hobbies were golf, tennis, reading, and gardening.  He will be dearly missed, beloved and known for his sense of humor, gentle and wise way, always the perfect southern gentleman. 

Virgil is survived by his wife of 62 years, Gillan Christian, and his son Virgil Christian, Jr (wife Amy), grandchildren Isabella and Kiara; daughter Leslie Christian and grandchildren Michael, (wife Kristen) and Morgan.

Virgil was preceded by his parents Wesley Wayne Christian and Ruth Holcomb Christian, and brother Lindsey Wayne Christian.

A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Burlington, NC on June 12th. 
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Parkinson’s Foundation, Hospice House in Burlington or First Presbyterian Church of Burlington.
