A kind and loving person who imparted comfort and strength to all who knew her, Violet Dorothy Patton joined her husband and son in heaven on December 1. Violet was a friend to all she met, a faithful servant of God, a compassionate and attentive listener, and an avid reader. Always warm and welcoming, she was known as “Gran” to many even outside her family. She always looked for, and found, the best in people, and she was a confidant to anyone who sat to talk with her.
The only child of Virginia Pierce and Bernice Elvin Stone, Violet was born July 3, 1927, and grew up in High Point and Burlington. She attended Broad Street High School, where she was editor of the newspaper and a top student. After graduation, Violet worked at the Times-News in Burlington, in the advertising department, before marrying D.C. Patton, who was the love of her life for 66 years. They raised three children, Danny Patton, Cheryl Malloy and Denise Johnson, and actively participated in the lives of their five grandchildren, Tara Kepley, Brooke Collins, Daniel Malloy, Katie Malloy and Colt Johnson. Violet loved her extended family, including her daughter-in-law Margaret Patton, whom she considered to be her third daughter, and sons-in-law Jim Johnson and Joe Malloy, as well as the spouses of her grandchildren, Paul Collins, Mike Kepley and Katie Cline Malloy. She thrived on reading to, and instilling a love for books in, her great-grandchildren, Kaleb Collins, Violet Malloy, Miles Malloy, Drew Collins and Lyla Malloy.
Violet was a stay-at-home mom who was devoted to her family, while also managing the finances of Patton Construction Company, founded by her husband who passed away in 2012. She also found time to be an active member of Macedonia Lutheran Church, where she worshiped for more than 70 years. She made a positive impact on every life she touched.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, December 4, 2021 at the Rich and Thompson Chapel in Burlington. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Friends of the Library at 342 S. Spring Street, Burlington, NC 27215.
