Tommy Marshall " Tom" Freeman

September 4, 1951 ~ March 14, 2018 (age 66) 66 Years Old

Obituary

Tommy Marshall Freeman, known to friends and family as “Tom,” passed away on March 14, 2018, at the age of 66 years.

A native of Anson County, Tom attended NC State University, where he graduated in 1973. Tom began his career in the textile and chemical industries as a teenager, working on the mill floors throughout high school and college. He ended that career more than half a century later as the International Accounts Manager for Central America with Piedmont Chemical Industries, where he worked for over 25 years. A longtime resident of Burlington, Tom was a member of both Southport Presbyterian Church and Front Street United Methodist Church, where he was a teacher of the Genesis Sunday school class. Tom was an avid tennis player, a talented (if sometimes reluctant) gardener, and a long-suffering but devout fan of his NC State Wolfpack. A storyteller in the classic Southern tradition, Tom wanted to be remembered in his own words - “I love Nancy, I love my family, I love my friends, I love beach music, and I love to shag. I also love cheeseburgers – Amen.” For their part, however, above all, his friends and family remember Tom as a loving husband, devoted father, and beloved “Pops.”

In addition to his wife Nancy, survivors include two sons, Ben Freeman (Rebecca) of Cary and their children Bryce, Estella, and Claire; Mark Freeman (Kelli) of Raleigh and their children Vivian, Selene, and Luke; daughter, Katy Anderson (Matthew) of Greensboro and their children Helen and Marian; four siblings, Bill Freeman (Martha) of Charlotte, Shirley Boyer (Ray) of Lilesville, Jimmy Freeman (Kendra) of Wadesboro, and Carol Ann Marsh of Concord; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be conducted at Front Street United Methodist Church on Sunday, March 25, 2018 at 1:30 p.m. by Rev. Ross Carter. The family will receive friends following the service in the Heritage Center of the church.

The family extends a special thanks to Front Street United Methodist Church, Southport Presbyterian, Piedmont Chemical, the Duke ALS Clinic, and the North Carolina Chapter of the ALS Association for their continued support.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The ALS Association North Carolina Chapter, http://webnc.alsa.org, the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation, https://nationalpcf.org, Front Street United Methodist Church, 136 South Fisher Street, Burlington, NC 27215, or Southport Presbyterian Church, 1025 E.
