Mrs Sylvia Mooney Oakley

Sylvia Oakley, 91, of Burlington, NC, passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, September 6, 2020. A native of Person County NC, she was the daughter of the late Hubert and Addie Bell Mooney. She was preceded in death by her husband of sixty years, Carl J. Oakley.

Mrs. Oakley is survived by three sons, Gordon Oakley and Don Oakley of the home, Jay Oakley and wife Marcia of Greensboro NC, three daughters, Karla Anderson of Graham, Kathy Latta and husband Martin and Denise Tate of Burlington and her sister Frances Bennett of Burlington. She had six grandsons: Ryan, Johnnie, Nathan, Jeffrey, Josh and Gregg, two granddaughters, Stephanie and Jessica and 5 great grandchildren.

Sylvia grew up on a farm with eleven siblings and enjoyed a happy childhood. She was first runner-up in the Miss Roxboro Pageant when she was 19. She was quite the seamstress, always sewing clothing for the children and grandchildren, costumes for theatre and the church and made quilts for every family member.
Sylvia worked in the office for a local supermarket chain for 17 years, and later at a clothing store part-time.

Above all, Sylvia was a loving, devoted mother to her children. Sylvia’s legacy is the love and instruction she left behind, setting a sacrificial example of the love of God.

She now resides in the presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Home at last.

Her memorial service will be held at Rich and Thompson Funeral Home in Burlington on Thursday, September 10th at 1:00 pm with burial to follow at Pine Hill Cemetery.
