Obituary

Shirley Payne Ivey, 84, of Elon passed away suddenly at Alamance Regional Medical Center on Wednesday, February 12, 2020 at 5:26 p.m.

A native of Orange County, Shirley was the wife of the late Jerry H. Payne, Sr. and the late George Ivey. She was the daughter of John Monroe Smith and Nannie Mae Parker Smith, both deceased.

Shirley was a member of Glen Hope Baptist Church since 1956 and a member of the Mildred Overman Sunday School Class. Her church family and friends were a very important part of her life. One of her favorite ministries was sending cards to people for their milestones and for the significant times in their lives. She loved people and enjoyed talking with many wherever she went.

Shirley, also known as momma and mawmaw, loved her family and spending precious time with them. She loved celebrating their lives in every way. She was very close to her nieces and nephews and enjoyed an ongoing relationship with them. Shirley will be forever remembered as a fun-loving, feisty little woman to family and friends.

Survivors include two children, Jerry H. Payne, Jr. and wife Sherrie Payne of Burlington, NC and daughter, Tammy Payne Taylor and husband Tom Taylor of Overland Park, KS; four grandchildren, Benjamin Payne and wife Kate of Burlington, NC, Katie-Beth Schultz and husband Matt of Georgia, Lauren Taylor Hile and husband David of Kansas and Thomas Taylor of Kansas; and four great-grandchildren, Hudson Payne, Levi Payne, Charlee Taylor and Olivia Hile. She was preceded in death by one sister, Edith Smith Hawkins and four brothers, Jennings Smith, Elbert Smith, Charlie Smith and Rev. D. W. Smith.

The funeral service will be conducted at the Rich & Thompson Chapel in Burlington on Sunday, February 16, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow at Alamance Memorial Park. At other times the family will be at the residence of Jerry and Sherrie Payne, 494 Parkview Drive, Burlington, NC 27215.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Alamance-Caswell, 914 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, NC 27215 or to Glen Hope Baptist Church, 911 North Avenue, Burlington, NC 27217.
