Mrs. Shirley Smothers Collins, 65, of Burlington passed away peacefully at the Hospice Home, surrounded by family, on Tuesday, February 5, 2019 after a yearlong battle with cancer.
A native of Kannapolis, she was the devoted wife of Glenn Howard Collins, who survives. She was the daughter of Robert Alton Smothers and Eunice Joplin Smothers, both deceased.
In addition to her husband of the home, survivors include two daughters, Laura Collins Fauver and husband Brian of Raleigh and Rebecca Artavia Ziebell and husband Jonathan of Seattle, WA. She leaves behind her beloved granddaughters, Annabelle Jane Fauver and Emmeline Claire Fauver, both of Raleigh. She was preceded in death by her brother, Robert David Smothers.
Shirley touched the lives of countless children and families as a retired elementary school teacher and social worker. She had a passion for childhood development that was never more evident than in her life as a mother and grandmother. Nana could always be found reading to her grandbabies, “playing school”, or acting out fairy tales like “The Princess and the Pea” for hours. Mama could season any recipe perfectly and make any house a home with her keen eye for decorating. Shirley enjoyed cooking for her family and loved the thrill of trying out new Southern Living recipes for special meals. Her green thumb could save any plant, and she loved all things that bloomed. Shirley never met a stranger, and her friends and coworkers always relied on her for advice. She was a storyteller and loved sharing life’s lessons with those around her. She was a devoted wife of 45 years and a faithful companion for life’s journey, which often ended at a Lexington barbeque restaurant. She treasured making memories with her family at Bald Head Island and Blowing Rock. There has never been a more selfless wife, mother, or grandmother.
A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held on Monday, February 18, 2019 at 5:00 PM at the chapel at Front Street United Methodist Church in Burlington.
Memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Alamance-Caswell (for the Hospice Home), 914 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, NC 27215.
