Ruth Thurman

March 9, 1918 ~ June 24, 2018 (age 100)

Ruth Moore Thurman, 100, passed away peacefully on June 24, 2018, in Burlington, North Carolina.
She was born in Vinton, VA, on March 9, 1918, to John and Gertrude Moore.

Ruth dedicated her life and love to her husband, Everette, and children Peggy and Billie Jo.
Everette Thurman was a musician and Music Director where his talents took him to Park Place Methodist Church in Norfolk, VA. Ruth was there to set up a beautiful home for him and their daughters.

Burlington was where Everette accepted a job with Webb Co. Ruth was excited to establish their permanent home there, a home that all were loved and welcomed. Many special memories were made in this home; memories that include good food, conversation and fun family time.

To her children and grandchildren, Ruth was known to be very kind-hearted. Her grandchildren will have the special memory of meeting Ruth and Everette, in Richmond, VA, the day after Thanksgiving, for many years. There, Ruth would slip an envelope to each child with Christmas money and send them off to Thalhimers and Miller and Rhoads to Christmas shop for their families.

Her surviving daughter has many lovely memories of her mother. She has especially expressed the talent Ruth had for sewing the most up to date and beautiful clothes for her and her sister. Ruth’s love showed in every beautiful, hand-made item gifted to family members.

Ruth was predeceased by her husband, William Everette Thurman; her daughter, Peggy Thurman Walls; her son-in-law, John (Jack) Millard Birsch Sr.; her parents; and her seven siblings.

Surviving Ruth are four generations. They are her daughter, Billie Jo Birsch of Virginia Beach, VA;
grandson, John (Jay) Millard Birsch Jr and his fiancé Rebecca Liebig of Virginia Beach; granddaughter, Bonnie Jo Birsch of Virginia Beach; granddaughter, Katherine Ruth Birsch-Pierson and her wife Dar J. Pierson of Winston-Salem, NC; granddaughter, Terri Walls Midgett and her husband David Midgett of Johns Creek, GA; six great grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren.

A service will be held in the Chapel of the Mausoleum at Alamance Memorial Park on Friday, June 29, 2018 at 2:00 p.m.

The family wants to thank the Burlington Staff at Liberty Commons Healthcare & Rehabilitation Services for the wonderful care given to Ruth.

The family also requests that in lieu of flowers; please make a donation to your favorite Charity.
