Robert "Bob" F. Horne

Robert “Bob” F. Horne, 93, of Burlington passed away at his residence on Saturday, November 13, 2021.

A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of the late Bettye Dillard Horne and the son of the late Harvey O. Horne and the late Mabel Wright Horne.

Bob was a veteran of the United States Army having served during the Korean Conflict. He was also a lifelong member of the First Christian Church of Burlington and a former Director of the YMCA. Bob’s family was involved with the historic Foster Shoe Company from its founding in 1889 through its closing in 2005. He was the principal owner and manager from 1955 until 2005. He also owned and operated Piedmont Diver’s Supply located above the shoe store from which he supplied diving equipment to all the local SCUBA enthusiasts. He also taught many hundreds of people to dive and enjoy the sport over many years.

Bob was a prolific and exacting woodworker. He built custom cabinetry and other furniture for people all over Burlington. He built all the store fixtures for Hickory Farms throughout Virginia, North and South Carolina. He was a mastermind of innovation and you could give him a problem and it would be solved!

Bob touched many lives, always in a good way and was universally loved by all who came to know him.

He is survived by his daughter, Susan W. Horne; son, James “Jim” D. Horne and his wife Cindy; and cousin, Eleanor Lovgren.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, John S. Horne.

His memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, November 18, 2021 at the First Christian Church of Burlington. The family will receive friends in the church sanctuary one hour prior to the memorial service.
