Robert "Bob" D. Bevan III

June 30, 1952 ~ June 30, 2017 (age 65) 65 Years Old

Robert Douglas Bevan III, known as Bob, passed away on Friday, June 30, his birthday, at his home in Chapel Hill.

Bob is survived by his wife, Bonnie Schaefer Bevan, and her two daughters—Anne Maness Whitney and husband Robert Whitney of Oakland, Calif., and Caroline Maness and husband Andrei Tsygankov of Atlanta, Ga. Other survivors include eight of Bob’s nine cousins, who live in Burlington and the Richmond area, and his aunt Ann Bevan Robbins of Chester, Va.

Bob was predeceased by his parents, Helen Kingsland Bevan and Robert Douglas Bevan, Jr.; his grandparents, Jesse and Beulah Bennett Kingsland and Robert Douglas and Mamie Bain Bevan; and his aunts Louise Kingsland Sharpe Dodson and Hilda Kingsland Gilliam, all of Burlington.

Bob and his mother lived with his Kingsland grandparents after his father died in 1956. Macedonia Lutheran Church was the family's church home. While a student at Walter Williams High School in Burlington, Bob was the editor of the student newspaper, The Barker.

Bob's passions were his alma mater Wake Forest University, basketball, writing, and walking outdoors. He was fiercely devoted to his family.

A lifelong journalist, Bob worked as a sports reporter, section designer and copy editor with The Twin City Sentinel in Winston-Salem, The Charlotte Observer, The News & Record in Greensboro, and the Southern Neighbor, a community tabloid that he co-founded with his wife, Bonnie. DTH Media Corporation now publishes Southern Neighbor as the sister publication of The Daily Tar Heel student newspaper at UNC.
