Richard Burke Plunkett II, 87, of Burlington passed away at his residence in Chapel Hill, NC on Thursday, January 21, 2021.
A native of Welch, West Virginia, he was the son of the late Richard Burke Plunkett and the late Oakie Jean Hoskins. He served in the United States Navy from 1952 until 1956. After service to his country, he graduated with honors from Undergraduate School at Virginia Polytechnic and State University and then earned Graduate Masters degrees from N. C. State University and The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He worked for and retired from AT&T (formerly Bell Labs) as an electrical engineer. After retirement, he earned his real estate license and sold real estate throughout Alamance County.
Survivors include a daughter, Olivia "Libby" Whitaker and husband David "Butch" Svendsgaard of Chapel Hill; son, Richard Clay Plunkett and wife Jill of Elon; five grandchildren, Olivia Plunkett, Hamilton Plunkett, Burke Whitaker, Anna Grace Whitaker and Caroline Whitaker; and his companion, Kendall Sites.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Richard Burke Plunkett, III and sisters, Martha Ann Plunkett and Andy Joe Goode.
He really enjoyed spending time with his family and especially liked bragging about his grandchildren. He also had a strong love for the Virginia Tech Hokies and enjoyed rooting for them from his recliner or at the stadium.
The family will hold a graveside service at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, January 27, 2021 at Pine Hill Cemetery. In regards to COVID-19 restrictions, please wear a mask and practice social distancing.
