Pauline Johnson Vaughn

Pauline Johnson Vaughn, 100, died peacefully at her home on Front Street on September 20. She was the wife of Guy Dale Vaughn and the daughter of Jo Bert and Sidney Johnson who preceded her in death.

Polly grew up in Bethel, NC. She obtained her teaching degree from ECTC (ECU) in Greenville, NC. She spent much of her life teaching. Polly was married for 66 years to Dale, having met while teaching together in Kinston, North Carolina. Throughout her teaching career, she taught not only in Kinston, but also in Tarboro and Winston Salem. Eventually, she and Dale settled in Burlington where they raised their children: Bob, Rick, and Jo Beth. She retired from the Burlington City School System in 1980 after teaching at Turrentine Junior High School. They were blessed with wonderful neighbors and a house full of children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her generous spirit and hospitality made her loved by all who knew her. She was always the heart of the family.

Polly was a member of Front Street United Methodist Church for 58 years. She loved her church and looked forward to fellowship with the United Methodist Women’s Circle Meeting and Bible Studies.

She is survived by her three children, Robert Dale Vaughn, Richard Sidney Vaughn (Linda Miles), and Jo Beth Jernigan; her grandchildren, Susan McMains (Dan), Joseph Vaughn, James Vaughn, Leah McBryde (Matt), Jared Vaughn (Michelle), Jacki Vaughn-Heath (Ashley), Ashley Hatley (Joseph), and Rebecca Stith (Christian). Her step-grandchildren Jonathan Miles (Mariam), Jeremy Miles (Amie), Jadrian Miles, and Devin Miles were also dear to her heart. Finally, Polly was also blessed with 13 great-grandchildren.

There will be a funeral service in the Chapel at Front Street United Methodist Church on Monday, September 24, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Ross Carter officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 12:45 until 1:45 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow at Alamance Memorial Park.

The Vaughn family would like to express their deep gratitude to all the wonderful caregivers for their loving care and support.
