Pauline Smith Gray

Mrs. Pauline Smith Gray, 93, of Burlington passed away Wednesday, November 28, 2018 at the Randolph Hospice House in Asheboro, N.C.
Mrs. Gray was born February 1, 1925 in Sampson County to Raymond Badger Smith and Floy Holland Smith, both deceased. She was raised in Ammon, located in Bladen County, where she worked on her family’s tobacco farm. She graduated from White Oak High School in 1942 and was employed by Bell South in 1944 as a telephone operator. She retired from the company in 1990 with 27 ½ years of service. Pauline married John W. Gray, Sr. on June 28, 1947 and was married for 51 years until his passing.
Mrs. Gray was an active longtime member of the First Baptist Church in Burlington where she was a good and faithful servant. She was a member of the Mary Martha Sunday School Class and served as treasurer for many years. Pauline was also a member of the JOY (Just Older Youth) Senior Group where she served as secretary for 18 years and helped with the phone tree. She assisted in preparing the Contacts for mailing and visited and delivered flowers to nursing home residents and sick members well into her 80’s and early 90’s.
Pauline loved to cook and to eat. She loved Carolina basketball, old-time country music, and George Strait. She loved her family and was the glue that kept them all together.
Survivors include five children: Liddiana/Barbara, Kenneth (Joyce), Will (Karen), Paula (Donald) and James (Laura); ten grandchildren and four great- grandchildren. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by four siblings: Bill, Elva, RB and Sadie.
The funeral service will be conducted at the First Baptist Church of Burlington on Tuesday, December 4, 2018 at 1:30 p.m. The family will receive friends from 12:00 until 1:30 p.m. in The Gathering Place at the church and burial will follow in Alamance Memorial Park.
