Naturally, I have fond memories of the time, many years ago, when Gene and I shared an apartment in New Jersey at Ivy Hills in South Orange. This was a wonderful, never to be forgotten experience for us green southern boys living up in this "foreign country" We were both on summer assignment with Bell Labs in the area. Seems that Gene did have a young wife and a new child back home so he commuted about every other weekend back to see them in Burlington. While our paths crossed less frequently through the years, I can add in with his other friends that there was no better man! This was a loss for us all. Dave

Gene and I were colleagues in the 1970s at Bell Labs, first at the Guilford Center in NC and later in Whippany in NJ. He was a pleasure to work with, and I always felt him to be far smarter than I! We had some fun times together with Will Wolfgang, another colleague and fun-loving guy.

When one looks back at a career one counts the accomplishments but, far more important, the relationships over the years. I was honored that Gene was part of my life in that interval.

RIP, friend! Bob

Gene was my first supervisor at Bell Labs. I highly respected him for his technical ability, and his dedication to his work. But, equally importantly, I appreciated his calm, warm and steady nature as a human being. I send my condolences to his family and those who have been close to him in his latter years, for I know you will greatly miss him.

I worked for Gene for a few of my years at Bell Laboratories. I can say unequivocally that he was one of the best supervisors I've had during my entire working career.. He was a great role model and provided much advice and guidance during my career. I have often thought of him since I retired in 2001 and am deeply saddened to hear of his passing. I wish to extend my deepest sympathies to his family for the loss of this wise and wonderful human being.
