Obituary


Nancy Louise Thomas of Burlington passed away on Monday, November 13, 2023. Born on August 10, 1946, she was the daughter of Anderson Reaves (Buck) Thomas and Louise Scott Thomas, both deceased. She was predeceased by her dear and special friend, Robert Raymond Tatum. She was also preceded in death by her beloved feline family members, Furry Thomas, Reggie Denson Thomas, and Baby Thomas.

Nancy was a graduate of Williams High School and Elon College. She was employed by Kernodle Clinic for over thirty years. Prior to that time she was Organist-Choirmaster of Graham Presbyterian Church for eleven years, Organist at Westview (now Westminster) Presbyterian Church for five years, and taught many piano and organ students. She also served as a substitute organist-choirmaster in many area churches.

Nancy was a member of Davis Street United Methodist Church in her youth. In 2007 she joined First Christian Church in Burlington where she served as a Deacon, Chairman of the Board of Finance, member of the Official Board, and President of the John Graves Sunday School Class. She also served as a member of the Board of Christian Education and the Chancel Choir and served as substitute Organist-Choirmaster in past years. In August 2021, she joined the First Presbyterian Church of Burlington where she met many new friends and participated as an usher when needed.

She was a member of the former Burlington Music Club and the Alamance County Piano Teachers Association, serving as President and in other offices of both organizations through the years.

Nancy is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Edward Scott Thomas and Estelle Isley Thomas of Durham; and her sister Mary Thomas Doyle (widow of the late Terry Doyle) of Bedford, Texas. She is also survived by three nephews, Scott Thomas of Durham; Scot Doyle and his wife Becky Doyle of Bedford, Texas; and Ronald Doyle and his wife Jenny Doyle of Frisco, Colorado. Also surviving are two great nephews, Christopher and Stephen Doyle; and one great-niece, Anne Doyle.

Nancy was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Carey Eugene Scott, Mary Starr Scott, and Mary McKenzie Thomas Scott, and her paternal grandparents, Edward Reaves Thomas and Lillie Foster Thomas.

A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 508 W. Davis St., Burlington, NC on Saturday, November 18, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. Burial will precede the memorial service. Visitation will be held at the church following the service. At other times the family will be at the home.
