Obituary

Mrs. Nancy Bain Bateman Lewis of Burlington passed away at her home on March 13, 2018.

She was born in Burlington, NC to Walter and Helen Bain. Nancy attended Hillcrest Elementary and was in the first class to graduate from Walter Williams High School. She attended Greensboro College before transferring to Elon College where she graduated.

Her first job was with the Burlington Police Department which she loved immensely. Using her college degree she then taught bookkeeping, shorthand and typing at Haw River High School and Eastern Alamance High School. She loved her students and they loved her. Many of her former students visited her over the years.

Nancy was a realtor for 17 years. She loved meeting and helping her clients. She was involved in helping plan realtor conventions and arranging the entertainment.

Nancy was a lifelong member of Front Street United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Methodist Women and Circle 4. She also taught Children’s Sunday School. Nancy loved bridge and belonged to many bridge clubs. She loved it best when she would play with her mother, Helen Bain, in bridge tournaments. Nancy belonged to the Alamance Country Club and served on numerous committees. She loved playing golf and tennis. She was a member of The Tennis Group which has been together for 25 years. Nancy belonged to the dance clubs of Bell and Bow, Shoe and Slipper, Serendipity, and Little Club.

Nancy’s love for travel started after graduating from Elon when she spent three months traveling through Europe. That love never left her as she continued travel to Europe over the years in France, Spain, Germany, especially Italy and in particular Florence. She also loved to cruise Russia, Scandinavia, the Caribbean, and the Panama Canal. She loved her anniversary trips to New York and Scottsdale, Arizona. She loved the numerous road trips through our western states, Glacier National Park and others. The week she loved the most was the last week of July at North Myrtle Beach with her family, especially her two grandchildren, Morgan and Gray, whom she loved so dearly.

She is survived by her husband of 26 years, John Lewis; son, Charles Bateman, Jr. of Chapel Hill; daughter, Susan Ingram and husband Rick; granddaughter Morgan and grandson, Gray, both of Ponta Vedra Beach, Florida; step-children, John Lewis, Jr. and wife Beverly of Coral Springs, FL, Mark Lewis and wife LeAnn of Nashville, TN, Kimberly Brooks and husband CWO Mike, USM Retired, Marilyn Allison and husband Derek of Oceanside, CA, Roger Lewis and wife Robbie of Nashville, TN and Leslie and Mark Forsley of Nashville, TN; 12 step-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild. In addition to her family, she is survived by the special ladies who lovingly cared for her every day: Brenda Senter, Wanda Clegg, Janice Wise, and Sandra Petteford and the wonderful Hospice nurses, Tina, Linda and others and social worker, Janet.

The family will receive friends at the Rich & Thompson Funeral and Cremation Service in Burlington on Friday, March 23, 2018 from 6 to 8 p.m. Other times the family will be at the home, 1712 Inglewood Drive, Burlington, NC.

The funeral service will be conducted at Front Street United Methodist Church on Saturday, March 24, 2018 at 12:00 noon by Rev. Ross Carter. Burial will follow at Pine Hill Cemetery.
