Mrs. Mildred Estelle Godwin Evans, 90, of Burlington died at Brookdale of Burlington on Monday, June 5, 2017 following several months of declining health.

A native of Sampson County, she was born December 31, 1926, the daughter of Paul Godwin and Thelma Strickland Godwin and the wife of the late Winford Bass and James Hildred Evans.

Mrs. Evans retired from the A&P Corporation after 32 years in 1977. She enjoyed being a wife and homemaker as well as working in her flower garden. She attended Lamb’s Chapel Church. Estelle dearly loved her family and was the matriarch of the Godwin family.

Survivors include two sisters, Josephine G. Tew and Frankie Mendenhall (Larry); three brothers, Rev. Joseph Lindell Godwin (Shirley), Paul Linwood Godwin and Edward Wayne Godwin (Pam); four step-children, M. Malissa Evans, Sandra Evans Gerringer (Richard), G. Dawne Evans (Ronald Aldridge) and Eric Evan Evans (Stacie); step-grandchildren; step-great-grandchildren; and extended family which includes many nieces and nephews whom she dearly loved.

The family will receive friends at the Rich & Thompson Funeral and Cremation Service in Burlington on Friday, June 9, 2017 from 6 until 8 p.m.

The funeral service will be conducted at the Rich & Thompson Chapel in Burlington on Saturday, June 10, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. by Rev. Joseph Lindell Godwin and Rev. Joe Godwin. Burial will follow in Alamance Memorial Park.

The primary caregivers for the past four years were Josephine G. Tew and her oldest niece, Cynthia K. Tew. The family would like to extend a special heartfelt thank you to the staff at Brookdale of Burlington and Hospice for their kindness, loving support and care.
