Michael Ray “Mickey” Wheeley, Sr.

Michael Ray “Mickey” Wheeley, Sr., 78, went to be with the Lord after a sudden battle with heart issues.

A native of Alamance County, he was the loving husband of Wanda Saul Wheeley of the home and son of Paul M. Wheeley and Nina Rae Henderson Wheeley, both deceased.

Other survivors include his son, Michael Ray Wheeley, Jr.; daughters, Jodie Spencer and husband Glenn and Jane Hogsed and husband Kevin; sisters, Gloria Ashley and husband Jerry and Cathy Terrell and husband Danny; one sister who was predeceased, Linda Brown; his grandchildren who were his treasures, Blair Hogsed, Nolan Hogsed, Mason Hogsed, Royce Hogsed, and Liliana Spencer.

He grew up in the town of Swepsonville near the ball field where he played baseball, softball and football for hours on end. He also enjoyed the community building and the Baptist Church where he became a royal Ambassador Extraordinaire.

He was in the Senior Class in the final years of Alexander Wilson High in 1960. His baseball team played Sylvan for the title and his football team made the playoffs stopping the number one team in the state, Allen Jay 12-12.

He was employed as a Real Estate Broker and a supervisor in textiles at #3 mill in Glen Raven until he became a mail carrier for 32 years in Graham.

He was proud to be an Air Force Veteran.

He loved to teach kids about sports. He coached baseball, football, and basketball. His girls’ basketball team won numerous championships in Graham.

The funeral service will be held at Bethel Baptist Church by Pastor David Jackson and Pastor Scott London on Monday, April 12, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 12:00 until 1:45 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow in Linwood Cemetery.
