Maude Johnson Woodruff, 99, formerly of Wilson, passed away peacefully at her home in Burlington Monday, August 6 with family by her side. Born in Wilson County on August 30, 1918, Maude was the daughter of the late Joseph Howard and Ella Mosley Johnson and the wife of the late James I. “Woody” Woodruff of Rocky Mount.
A charter member of Grace Baptist Church in Wilson, Maude taught Sunday School for over 30 years, most of those in the Beginners class, and served on numerous church committees. She also acted as GA and YWA leader and participated actively in various WMU missions as well as other church causes.
Maude is survived by her son James Kenneth “Ken” Woodruff and wife Carol (Talley) of Burlington, and daughter Betty Kathryn and husband William Dwayne Brown of Raleigh; 6 grandchildren, Kelly, Lynn, Brad, and Kyle Woodruff and Meagan and Zachary Brown; and 9 great-grandchildren. Maude was preceded in death by her 5 brothers and 2 sisters. She also leaves behind her special caregiver, Jennifer Darnell of Mebane, to whom the family is eternally grateful for her understanding, kindness, and diligence in supporting Maude for the past 4 years.
The family will celebrate Maude’s life in a private service Sunday, August 12. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Autism Society of NC, 5121 Kingdom Way, Suite 100, Raleigh, NC 27607 or to Hospice and Palliative Care of Alamance-Caswell, 914 Chapel Hill Rd., Burlington, NC 27215.
