Mary B. Wood

Mary B. Wood, 89, formerly of Forestdale Drive in Burlington died Sunday, April 15, 2018 at The Village at Brookwood in Burlington.

A native of Randolph County she was the daughter of Kirby Brown and Aurelia Leonard Brown, both deceased. She earned her B.S. in Education at Elon University and met her late first husband, Frank Sherard, Jr. Mary began her teaching career once her three daughters started school. She presided over first grade classes at Fisher Street and Andrews Elementary Schools for 30 years before retiring, and was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma.

Mary and Frank developed the Sherard property (near Shamrock Golf Course) and Camp Sherwood became a busy place for the next 17 or 18 years with up to 40 boys and girls attending for several weeks each summer. Those children included hundreds of Burlington-area kids over the years-many of them children of current TVAB residents.

Mary later was married for nearly 20 years to the late Bill Wood, a Graham attorney. They were active members of Front Street United Methodist Church and Alamance Country Club. She loved being a member of the Ladies Golf Association at Alamance Country Club.

Her daily life at The Village, where she has lived since 2009 is considerably quieter than first grade or summer camp. Here, her special friend was a very quiet “senior companion” a 16-year-old Schnauzer named Bertha.

Mary is survived by three daughters, Kathryn S. Thompson, Janet S. Foster and husband Bo, and Stephanie S. Huffstetler and husband Sam; four grandchildren, John Lynn Blackwood and wife Stephanie, Sherard H. Spangler and husband Ernest, Jeffrey J. Thompson, and William “Bo Bo” Stafford Foster, IV; four great grandchildren, Samuel W. Spangler, Banks S. Blackwood, Jeremy M. Thompson, and Joshua D. Thompson; her sister in law, Clara W. Brown; and nieces and nephews, Cindy, Anne, Steve, Margaret and Monroe.

In addition to her parents and husbands she was preceded in death by her brother, Henry M. Brown.

A graveside service will be held at Magnolia Cemetery in Elon on Tuesday, April 17, 2018 at 12:00 PM.

A funeral service will be conducted in the Chapel of Front Street United Methodist Church on Tuesday, April 17, 2018 at 1:00 PM by Rev. Ross Carter and Dr. William C. Simpson.
