Mary Newton, 81, of Swepsonville, died May 2, 2023 at Hospice House from a brief illness. She is home with her Savior. She is survived by her husband of 60 years Roy and a son, Christopher and predeceased by her canine companion, Mary Elizabeth. Mary was also predeceased by a son, Kirk, who died in a tragic car accident in 2016. She was the daughter of Clyde Moore and Carrie Chambers Moore.
Born in Wentworth in 1942, she graduated from Wentworth High School and later attended computer classes at ACC. Her family moved to Swepsonville in the early 60’s where she met Roy Newton. They married in 1962.
Mary was the secretary and bookkeeper for Newton’s Texaco for 20 years. She was employed part-time at the Sweps. Post Office and was an assistant at the Thompson Township/Sweps. Precinct. She retired from Belk’s in Burlington.
She was a “Pink Lady” at ARMC, a member of the Swepsonville Fire Dept. Ladies’ Auxiliary, a past member of the Swepsonville Baptist Ladies’ Circle, and a member of Greenway Park Baptist where her voice praised God often.
Mary enjoyed traveling from LA to Ontario. Her best times she once said were the family beach trips they would take when her children were young.
Other than her family of the home, she is survived by a sister, Barbara Knight Walker of Reidsville; sister-in-law, Janice Williams; niece, Rene Lefler (Curtis); nephews, Tony (Renae), Dean (Theresa), and Jeff Knight; grand-niece, Taylor Fowler (Jake); and grand-nephews, Seth Newton (Angie) and Phillip Newton.
The funeral service will be conducted at the Rich & Thompson Chapel in Graham on Saturday, May 6, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. by Rev. Aaron Wall. The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm prior to the funeral service. Burial will follow at Phillips Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery.
