Lucy Stout Hiatt

February 23, 1960 ~ July 16, 2023 (age 63) 63 Years Old


Lucy Stout Hiatt passed away peacefully at the AuthoraCare Hospice Home on Sunday, July 16, 2023 following a courageous 38 year battle with brain cancer.

A native of Alamance County, she was the daughter of the late Clarence Otis Stout and Peggy Ray Stout, who survives. In addition to her mother of the home, she is also survived by a sister, Debbie Stout Farrell, and husband Butch of Mebane; a niece, Amy Clayton Woolard, and husband Dalton of Reidsville; a great-nephew, Landon Tillman Woolard of Reidsville; three aunts, Barbara Ray Martin of Clemmons, Rozelle Ray Horne of Macclenny, FL, and Peggy Stout Faucette of Mebane; 12 first cousins; and 18 second cousins. Lucy is also survived by her very dear friends, Lisa Holt of Graham, Rita Doll of Macon, GA, and Teri Kertesz of Graham.

Lucy was a lifetime member of Graham Presbyterian Church where she was involved in Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, Children’s Choir, and Vespers. She was also a member of the Girl Scouts of America.

Lucy attended Graham High School where she was a J.V. and Varsity Cheerleader, a member of the National Honor Society, Civinettes, and French Club. Due to a move with her family to Marietta, GA, Lucy graduated from Walton High School in 1978, where she was a Varsity basketball cheerleader. She graduated with honors from the University of Georgia with a degree in Pharmacy and was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority. After graduation, Lucy passed the North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination and was then employed by Rite Aid Pharmacy in Mt. Airy, NC. She served as Vice-President and President of the Surry County Pharmaceutical Association.

Lucy was a strong woman of faith, reading and studying her Bible daily. She was a kind, thoughtful, and giving person. Through 38 years of battling cancer, she never once complained and did not feel that her health issues were a burden. She enjoyed traveling, shopping, cross stitching, word search puzzles, watching her Georgia Bulldogs win National Football Championships, and spending time with her family and friends.

Lucy was preceded in death by her husband, Reid Hiatt; her father, Clarence O. Stout; grandparents, Dewitt and Naomi Ray and Lester and Lucy Stout; and step-grandmother, Mattie Belle Stout; and several aunts and uncles.
The family will receive friends at Rich & Thompson Funeral Home in Graham on Friday, July 21, 2023 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. A celebration of Lucy’s life will be held at Graham Presbyterian Church on Saturday, July 22, 2023 at 2:00 p.m., officiated by Dr. Steve Braswell and Rev. Michael Sarvis. Burial will follow at Hawfields Cemetery in Mebane.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Brotherhood Sunday School Class of Graham Presbyterian Church, 216 West Harden Street, Graham, NC 27253 would be appreciated.
