Lucy Newlin Bowden

January 27, 1926 ~ May 25, 2019 (age 93) 93 Years Old

Obituary

Lucy Newlin Bowden, age 93, went home to be with her Lord and Creator on Saturday, May 25, 2019, at the Presbyterian Home of Hawfields.  Lucy grew up in Saxapahaw and spent her adult life in Burlington.  She operated her own beauty shop on Beaumont Avenue for over 15 years.   Lucy was a member of Webb Avenue Methodist Church (now Emmanuel UMC) for almost 70 years.  For 52 years she was the wife of Walter W. Bowden, who passed in 2000.   She was the mother of Lucy Raye Bowden Scott (David) and Julie Bowden Walker (Ken).

Born on January 27, 1926, Lucy was the daughter of the late Mary Emma Overman Newlin and Robah B. Newlin.  In addition to her daughters she is survived by 5 grandchildren; Julie Scott Emmons (Karl), Jason Scott (Rebekah) both of Mebane; Stephen Walker (Rachel) of Leland, NC; Brad Walker (Elissa) of Wilmington, NC; and John Walker (Jessica) of Hillsborough, NC.  She is also survived by 8 great grandchildren: Jacob Scott Emmons, Miranda and Duncan Scott, Meredith and Charlotte Walker, Emelia and Elena Walker and Finley Walker.  She had many dear nieces and nephews who loved her and whom she loved.

In addition to her parents and husband Walt, Lucy was preceded in death by a number brothers and sisters: Garland M. Newlin (Velna), infant John David Newlin, Mabel Newlin O’Neil, Locke Newlin (Christine), Mary Newlin Saunders (Keith), Olivia Newlin Jones (Buck), infant Bessie Pearl Newlin, infant baby boy Newlin, Alberta Newlin Anderson (James), Edith Newlin Cooper (A.G.), Allen Newlin (Sarah) and Ruth Newlin Davis (John).

Lucy will be remembered for her loyalty to her family and friends, for her wit and humor, and for the deep sense of value that she placed on every person who came into her life.  The family especially wants to express appreciation for her dear and faithful friends which include Argie Bivens and her daughter, Ellen Dodson, Mary Woody, Nellie Isley, and her recently departed roommate, Becky Albright and her daughters.  Special thanks also are extended to the caregivers who have served Lucy for the past 5 years; Eileen, Anita, Tiawana, Heather and Bret.  Thanks also to the staff of the Presbyterian Home of Hawfields.

A service of remembrance will be held in the chapel of Rich & Thompson Funeral Home, Burlington, at Monday, May 27 at 11AM.  The family will greet visitors after the service.  There will be a private interment at Alamance Memorial Park at a later date.

In lieu of flowers the gift of a ‘Lucy like’ word of encouragement, a helping hand to the needy, and a listening ear to those who struggle, would reflect well on Lucy’s legacy.  Memorials may be sent in her memory to The Presbyterian Home of Hawfields, 2502 NC Hwy 119S, Mebane, NC 27302
