Obituary

Lois Long Stockard, 89, of Elon passed away at Beacon Place Hospice Unit on February 24, 2021.

A native of Person County, she was the wife of Dr. Robert Moore Stockard, Jr. for 66 years. She was the daughter of the late Stephen Reams Long and the late Sue Cates Long and step daughter of the late Lois Tuck Long.

Mrs. Stockard first attended Women’s College in Greensboro and ultimately graduated from Elon College with an education degree. She began her teaching career at EM Holt school until deciding to stay at home with her children. After raising her two daughters, Mrs. Stockard returned to her love of teaching at Graham High School. During her time there, she served on a number of committees but was most proud of her work as Senior Class advisor where she organized the graduation ceremony for many years.

Mrs. Stockard was a long-standing member and elder at Graham Presbyterian Church. She was very involved in her church work and served as clerk of the church’s session. She was a member of the Pastoral committee, Monday Morning Women’s Circle and Living Faith Sunday School class. Mrs. Stockard was also instrumental in establishing the Graham Presbyterian Playschool. For her dedication and tireless work in her church home, she received the honor of Presbyterian Woman of the Year.

In addition to her church work, Mrs. Stockard was involved in several organizations and clubs such as Alpha Delta Kappa Teachers Sorority, Leornian Book Club, and the Burlington Woman’s Club.

Survivors include two daughters, Susan Stockard Hodge and her husband C. Timothy Hodge of Charlotte and Catherine Stockard Anderson and her husband Dr. Marshall Wilson Anderson, III of Burlington; four grandchildren, Jennifer Hodge Patchett and her husband Robert Patchett of Holly Springs, Clayton Timothy Hodge of Charlotte, Marshall Wilson Anderson, IV “Will” and his wife Lauren Snipes Anderson of Greensboro, Caroline Anderson Childs and her husband C. Luke Childs of Burlington; and one great-granddaughter, Emily Anne Patchett.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Robert Moore Stockard, Jr.

A private service will be held at the Graham Presbyterian Church Memorial Garden.
