Leon Lunsford

June 9, 2017

Leon Lunsford, 83, passed away on June 9, 2017 after a brief illness. Leon was born in Person County to Lewis Crockett Lunsford and Ida W. Lunsford, both deceased.
From the young age of three years old when he lost his father, Leon had to quickly learn the role of sharing the responsibility in caring for the family. He learned the value of hard work as soon as he was old enough to start working in the tobacco fields. He continued this with his family until he started working at Burlington Industries (BI) at 19 years old. He would work at BI on third shift, then leave there to help his brother build houses on first shift. He retired from BI after 40+ years and you could count on two hands the number of times he was absent from work, which demonstrates his incredible work ethic.
Leon was a devoted husband, a loving father, and he always shared his wisdom and knowledge with his children and grandchildren. His family and friends would always say how much of a positive role model he was by always thinking of others. One of his most enjoyable past times was going to McDonald's every morning and socializing with all of his buddies. He always had a joke to tell to make you laugh. Many long-lasting and cherished friendships developed amongst this group. He was a devoted and loyal friend to so many, and they were also to him. This included friendships that started back in school and they remained the best of friends throughout life. Leon also enjoyed being outdoors, driving his convertible Mustang, and going down to Wilmington.
Leon was proceeded in death, by the love of his life, Joan. Shortly before her passing, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
Leon and Joan had two children. One son, Ronald Keith who is deceased. Surviving is one daughter, Lori Anne, who never left her daddy's side.
Also surviving include two grandchildren Crystal Fogleman (Chad) and Josh Manning, as well as two great-grandchildren, Cailyn and Caleb Fogleman.
Leon had two brothers who preceded him in death, Lewis Lunsford and Wilmer Lunsford. One sister, Marjorie Oakley, who survives.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Alamance-Caswell at: 914 Chapel Hill Rd, Burlington, NC 27215.
A graveside service will be held at Westwood Cemetery on the 100 block of Fidelity St. in Carrboro, NC on Sunday, June 11, 2017 at 4:00pm, with a viewing of the body at 3:45pm.
A special thank you to all of the special nurses and caregivers at Hospice.
