Leon Carrington Hinton, Sr., 92, of Burlington, died Monday, May 20, 2019 at Edgewood Place.
A native of Danville, Virginia, Mr. Hinton was the husband of the late Maxine Coleman Hinton and the son of the late Carl Carrington Hinton and the late Bessie Seamster Hinton.
Mr. Hinton was a member of New Life at Hocutt Church. He retired from Kayser-Roth and Baby Needs, Inc. as Controller and Treasurer. He has two BA’s from Elon College (now University), 1947 in accounting and business and an MA from NC A&T State University, 1982.
Mr. Hinton recently published a book entitled “Soap Box”. He was a Burlington poet and short story writer. His is past president of the North Carolina Poetry Society, past president of the Burlington Writer’s, was on the Founding Board of the NC Writers Network, listed with the NC Writers Conference, a long-time board member of the Poetry Council of NC and a member of the NC Writer’s Association. He has taught business subjects and creative writing at Alamance Community College and was the Saturday Supervisor there. His poetry and short stories have appeared mostly in anthologies and local newspapers.
Mr. Hinton is survived by his daughter, Donna Hinton Skubinna (Neil), of Swansboro; his son, Lee C. Hinton, Jr. (Gina) of Burlington; grandchildren, Nicholas Hinton (Ashley) and Emily Hinton (Meredith); great-grandchildren, Wyatt Hinton, Lillie Hinton and Aubrey Thornburg; a sister, Doris Hinton Tew; many nieces, nephews and close friends.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, May 22, 2019 from 1:45 to 2:45 PM at Rich and Thompson Funeral and Cremation Service in Burlington.
A funeral service will follow at 3:00 PM in the Rich and Thompson Chapel. Officiating will be Pastor Mark Stewart. Burial will be in Mt. Zion Christian Church Cemetery.
