October 13, 1932 ~ April 23, 2021 (age 88) 88 Years Old

Obituary

THANK YOU FOR LOVING US PAP! Mr. Joseph D. Webb (Joe), 88, of Elon, died Friday, April 23, 2021, at his home. Joe was born in Bluefield, WV, on October 13, 1932, and was the husband of the late, Jane Chandler Webb, and son of John Freeman Webb and Dorothy Elizabeth Webb of Bluefield, WV, both deceased.
Joe graduated from Beaver High School in Bluefield, WV, in 1951. His career began with the Norfolk & Western Railway followed by a four-year tour of duty with the U.S. Air Force. Joe served as an aircraft mechanic in the European Theatre of World War II. Upon returning home, Joe began working at General Electric (GE) in Salem, VA. He was transferred to North Carolina as part of the start-up team for a new manufacturing plant in Mebane, NC. After thirty-one years of service, Joe retired from GE in 1990. Soon after, GE asked Joe to rejoin the company as a Quality Assurance Contractor for an additional three years.
In retirement, Joe followed his passion, GOLF! Most golfers never experience the satisfaction of a hole-n-one. Joe had four during his lifetime: the first in 1993 on hole eight(#8) at Indian Valley (seven wood), the second on hole four (#4) at the Challenge (pitching wedge), the third on hole seventeen (#17) at the Challenge (seven wood) and the fourth in 2012 on hole eleven (#11) at Quarry Hills (driver).
Most importantly, Joe loved his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He loved St. Mark’s Church and Joe and Jane served in the Dime’s Ministry for many years. Joe was a ray of sunshine to all who knew him. His family is so grateful for how Joe loved the Lord, how he loved each of them, how he loved their mother and grandmother and the legacy he set to follow.
Joe is survived by his step-daughter, Mrs. Andrea H. Taylor and husband Bernie, of Graham, NC and step-son, Mr. Andrew H. Hanford (Andy) and wife, Marsha, of Graham, NC. He was most proud of his four grandchildren, Drew Hanford, Holly Ruffolo and husband Danny, Madison Hanford, Mason Taylor and his great-grandchild, Zachary Ruffolo. Joe is also survived by two sisters, Ms. Phyllis Miller, of Gibsonville, NC, Ms. Sandra Smith, of Bluefield, WV, sister-in-law, Ms. Phyliss Webb of Bluefield, WV and sister-in-law, Mrs. Brenda Matherly and husband Johnny, of Burlington, NC. He leaves behind many loving nieces and nephews as well as grand nieces and nephews from the Chandler and Webb families who will always remember his ever-present smile and kind, generous spirit.
Joe was preceded in death by three siblings, John Webb Jr., Elizabeth Webb Noble, Kenneth Webb and Joe’s first wife, Jewel Hawkins Webb, son, Joseph Webb, and step-son, Walter Hanford Jr.
The family would also like to thank Hospice and Joe’s personal caregiver, Ms. Christina Sutton.
A memorial service celebrating Joe’s life will be held at St. Mark’s Church on Friday, April 30, 2021 at 12:00 p.m. The Reverends, Bob Disher and Ben Bishop, will officiate. Internment will be at Long’s Chapel, NC-Highway 49, Burlington, NC. A visitation will be held at 11:00 am before the service.
