Jerry Lee Hensley

Mr. Jerry Lee Hensley, 74, of Elon passed away at the Hospice Home on Sunday, July 16, 2017 at 10:55 a.m.

A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Nancy Bryant Waters Hensley, who survives and the son of Vernon Sidney Hensley and Ruth Bright Hensley Wilson, both deceased.

Mr. Hensley was a forklift mechanic. He was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church where he served on various committees since 1978 such as the Building/Grounds and Parsonage Committee. He started the St. Paul’s barbeque dinners in 1981 with his original recipes and continued his leadership capacity for 20 years. When the fellowship hall was built, he ordered all tables and chairs. Jerry also hung all the blinds in the church; baked for the bake sale; worked at the Good Shepherd Kitchen; and bought and coordinated fruit bags for the congregation at Christmas. He served as an usher, Youth Group leader and Nursery Attendant. He was mentor for several young trout fishermen in Maggie Valley with a special place in his heart for Issac and Keith. He was also part of the group responsible for the purchase of the church bus that provided many memorable trips for adults and youth.

In addition to his wife of the home, survivors include three daughters, Lisa Hensley and companion Rodney Farrell of Burlington, Dawn Hensley Burrows and husband John of Burlington and Angie Waters Yeatts and husband Chris of Celina, TX; one brother, Jack Hensley and companion Joyce Boone of Burlington; two sisters, Reva Goodwin of Elon and Glenda Barker and husband Pete of Burlington; six grandchildren, Natalie Stevenson and husband Chris, Justin Rush, Hannah Yeatts, Cole Yeatts, Jake Burrows and Connor Burrows; two great-grandchildren, Kahde Stevenson and Brighton Stevenson; and numerous other extended relatives. He was preceded in death by a brother, Jimmy Hensley; sister-in-law, Judy Moore Hensley; and brother-in-law, Tommy Goodwin.

The family will receive friends at the Rich & Thompson Funeral and Cremation Service in Burlington on Tuesday, July 18, 2017 from 6 until 8 p.m. Other times they will be at the residence.

The funeral service will be conducted at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church on Wednesday, July 19, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. by Rev. Trey Harris. Burial will follow in Shallow Ford Church Cemetery. The body will be taken to the church to lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service.
