Jan Hooft

Mr. Jan Hooft , 90, of Durham passed away on Friday, August 9, 2019 at the Carver Living Center in Durham, NC.

He was the husband of 53 years to the late Ruby Whichard Starr Hooft and the son of the late Alexander and Hendrietta Hooft. A native of Amsterdam, Holland, he became a U. S. citizen in 1966. He was a former horticulturist with Carolina Biological Supply Company, was instrumental in organizing the Men’s Garden Club of Burlington, served on the Burlington Tree Advisory Board, and was a member of the Hospice League and St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.

Jan loved to read, especially books on theology, and listen to classical music. His favorite retirement activities were gardening and sitting outside on the patio visiting with family and friends.

Survivors include three daughters, Jan Campito (Mark), Kim Bair (Bruce) and Veronica Botzis (Nick); three sons, Christian Hooft (Carol), Pieter Hooft (Cindy) and John Starr; 16 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Nannie Bair and one brother, Hans Hooft.

The funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm on Monday, August 12, 2019 at the Rich and Thompson Chapel in Burlington. The family will receive friends from 12:00 pm until 12:45 pm prior to the funeral service. The committal service will be held at the mausoleum at Alamance Memorial Park immediately following the funeral service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 1200 West Cornwallis Road, Durham, NC 27705-5731.
