Obituary


Jack Rogers Lindley, Sr., 88, of Burlington passed away peacefully at home on Friday, May 5, 2023.

A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Dorothy Clark “Dot” Lindley and the son of Harvey Winfred Lindley and Cassie Mattox Lindley. He was the brother of H.W. Lindley, Tom Lindley, Sr., and Mary Elizabeth McCauley. In addition to his wife of 68 years, he is survived by his sisters Frances Clapp and Peggy Mullis.

Others left to cherish his memory include his children, Gail and Tom McGowen of Burlington, Jay and Susan Lindley of Burlington, and Tamara and Joe Caforio of Marietta, GA; grandchildren, Lindley (McGowen) Lacey, Davis McGowen, Will McGowen, Sam McGowen, Elizabeth (Lindley) Lynch, Jack Lindley, III, John Lindley, Michael Savransky, Ally (Savransky) McKenzie, Catrina (Caforio) Edge, and Joey Caforio; and eighteen great grandchildren.

Jack was a 1956 graduate of Elon College where he earned a B. A. Degree in Business Administration. He was very active in Property and Casualty Insurance for 28 years where he served as CEO of Jack Lindley, Inc. He was also CEO of Industrial Paper Products, Inc. and one of the founders and developers of Burlington Outlet Mall.

He was a faithful member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church where he served as Chairman of the Administrative Board, Treasurer (a position held for 50+ years), and served on the Finance Committee, Church Council, and President of the Methodist Men.

Jack was very active in the community. He was President of Alamance Community College Foundation (1991-1992); member of the Alamance County Area Chamber of Commerce where he served on the Board of Directors (1989–1995), Vice Chairman and Chairman of the Membership Committee (1991-1992), and Board Chairman (1993); United Way Chairman 1997, Campaign and Board Chairman (1998); Board of Directors of the Foundation of Alamance County; Board of Directors of Alamance Community College Emeritus; Salvation Army Board; Alamance Eldercare Board; United Way Board and Executive Committee; Board of Trustees Elon University; ARMC Foundation Board; Alamance Citizens for Education Board – Trustee; Alamance County Chamber Economic Development Foundation Board; Alamance Country Club, Chairman and Membership Committee and House and Social; involved with Methodist College and Duke Power; President of the Alamance Country Club (1992 and 2003); Founding member of the Burlington Luncheon Club and was the first Student Body President of Williams High School (Class of 1952).

He was Chamber of Commerce Director of the Year (1991); Citizen of the Year Award Sponsored by Kiwanis (1994); Elon College Frank S. Holt Business Leadership Award (2000); Alamance County Chamber Entrepreneur of the Year (2001); Alamance County Man of the Year (2004); Elon University Distinguished Alumnus of the Year (2010); and Boy Scouts of America Man of the Year (2004).

While his accomplishments and community service were many, Jack’s overwhelming love was for Christ, his family, and the American Flag. He enjoyed traveling with Dot, his family, and friends. He loved golf, his tennis group, Braves baseball, coin collecting, and working puzzles. Jack was one of the best joke tellers there ever was.

The family will receive visitors at noon and the celebration of Jack’s life will be conducted at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, May 9, 2023, in the Rich & Thompson Chapel in Burlington. There will be a private burial on Wednesday.
