Jack Leonard, Sr,
Al Jack (Jack) Leonard, Sr., was born February 17, 1933, in Randolph County, North Carolina, to the late Julius F. Leonard and the late Alice Elizabeth Stanley Leonard. He died at Duke Hospital in Durham, North Carolina, on April 16. 2021. He was a resident of Burlington, North Carolina, for over sixty years. He would quickly tell you that the best thing he ever did, accepting Jesus Christ as his savior, was closely followed by his decision to marry his “queen,” Grace. He was the long-time owner of Queen Ann Street Barber Shop and worked at other shops in Alamance County since 1960. He repaired antique clocks, loved to cook big dinners for large crowds, and loved to tell jokes and give candy to the neighborhood and church children. He was an active participant at the Graham Senior Center and walked three miles a day until the pandemic caused the program to be suspended. He was a Sunday School teacher, lay speaker, and a member of Kinnett Memorial Baptist Church in Burlington.
Jack was married to Grace Gillespie Leonard, who survives, on February 7, 1960, and they celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary this year. He is also survived by: a daughter Beth Leonard Mckay (Andrew) of Apex; three sons Al Leonard, Jr., (Suzette) of Tabor City; David Leonard (Angela) of Mebane; and Stanley Jordan Leonard of Pensacola, Florida. His five grandchildren also survive: Hannah Leonard Powell (Nick), Abigail Leonard (fiancée, Garrison Vick), Ryan Leonard (Cheryl), Kirsten Leonard Nason (Darren), and Leanna McKay. He was very proud of his surviving great-grandsons: Jackson Powell and Nathan Leonard. His brother Jesse Leonard of Randolph County survives as do numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his siblings: Louise Szarka, William (Sam) Leonard, Dorothy Oates, Lester Leonard, James (Rass) Leonard, and Joy Hayes.
A funeral service to celebrate Jack’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday 4/19/2021 at the Rich and Thompson Chapel in Graham. Burial will follow at Pine Hill Cemetery in Burlington. Friends are invited to pay their respects to Jack at the funeral home from 10:00 a.m. Monday until 2:00 p.m. for viewing and signing his guest book.
