Irene Lorraine Kelley Hunt passed away at her family home Saturday, October 26, 2019.
She is survived by her husband of 68 ½ years, Albert Monroe Hunt, Capt USN (Ret), and their two children, Susan H. Ball of Memphis, TN and Albert Monroe Holt, Jr., of Burlington, NC.
Irene and Albert have nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren located across the country.
Irene also leaves behind a younger sister, Catherine Kelley Sullivan of Bridgewater, MA.
Irene was born on October 29th, 1932, in Gloucester, MA and graduated from Bridgewater High School in Massachusetts. She married Albert in April of 1951 and attended The Brockton School of Nursing for one year before Albert’s military obligations took her away from school and into 30 years of service as wife and team member to a Naval Officer.
Duty stations included Ankara, Turkey; Paris, France; and Seoul, Korea where her passion for learning and creating thrived as she immersed herself in the culture, language, history and cuisine of the countries she lived in. Irene loved skating, dancing, swimming and was an avid reader. She was a life long gardener and member of the Garden Club, and a devoted fur-baby mom.
Irene, known as “Rene” to her friends and family had a quick mind, a well-developed sense of humor, high ethical work and spiritual standards for herself and her family. While an excellent student in the class room, she had a firm grasp on the realities of the world in which we live. When those who knew her saw her coming, they smiled. She was deeply loved and will be sorely missed by her husband, family and friends.
Irene and Albert are members of Mebane Presbyterian Church. A memorial service will be held there on Saturday, November 2, 2019, at 4:00 PM. The family will receive friends from 3:30 to 4:00 PM prior to the service. The church is located at 402 S. 5th Street, Mebane, NC 27302.
