Harriet Ives Bingenheimer, 89, passed away on July 17, 2019 at Wade Coble Healthcare Center at Twin Lakes Community in Burlington, NC after years of declining health due to Multiple Sclerosis. Her courageous struggle with MS was an inspiration to all who knew and loved her.
Harriet was born on October17, 1929, in Davidson, NC. She was the daughter of the late Katherine Earle Ives and Claude Lee Ives. She graduated from Davidson High School and attended Davidson College and Women’s College (now known as UNC-Greensboro). She was a former elder and deacon at Edgewood United Church of Christ along with being a member of the choir and choir director. Harriet most recently attended Front Street United Methodist Church. Other activities included being President of the Burlington Women’s Club where she was honored with the Lifetime Membership Award of the North Carolina Federation of Women’s Clubs. In addition, Harriet was a member and past President of the former Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.
After being diagnosed with MS in 1981, she was the co-founder of the Alamance/Burlington Chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Support Group. Other interests included reading, playing bridge and a love of music.
Her greatest love was her husband of 66 years, the late Charles G. Bingenheimer. She was an inspiration to her family and friends for her faith, her strength, her courage and her love of life even with her continued struggles with her health.
Surviving are her daughters, Katherine B. Lafone of Charlotte, NC and Lee B. Miller and husband Chet of Burlington, NC; son Charles G. Bingenheimer, Jr. and wife Beth of Ocean Isle Beach, NC. Harriet is also survived by seven grandchildren: Ellen L. Comeaux of Atlanta, GA, Melanie L. Frazier (Dale) of Clarksville, TN, Lauren B. Smith (Blake) of Raleigh, NC, Nancee B. Alavi (Justin) of Miami, FL, Christopher C. Miller (Rikki) of Charlotte, NC, Todd M. Miller (Blair) of Clemmons, NC and Griffin Lafone of Charlotte, NC. Surviving also are sixteen great-grandchildren and her beloved brother Claude L. Ives, Jr., niece Cherrye Small and nephews Lee Ives and Preston Ives.
Funeral services will be held at Front Street United Methodist Church on Sunday, July 21, 2019 at 2:00pm. The family will receive friends after the service in the Heritage Room at the church. All other times the family will receive friends at the residence of Chet and Lee Miller at 425 Meadowood Drive, Burlington, NC. A private burial service will be at Pine Hill Cemetery.
