Mr. Gordon Brandon Sumner, 83, of Haw River went home to be with the Lord on Friday, January 4, 2019 at 2:30 a.m.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of the late Mary Alice Crutchfield Sumner and the son of Herbert Sumner and Elizabeth Taylor Sumner, both deceased. He retired from Burlington Industries and was a member of Salem United Methodist Church.
Mr. Sumner was an ardent family genealogist and Civil War buff. He and his bride Mary shared a great love of miniature dachshunds surpassed only by their total devotion to their single granddaughter Katie.
Survivors include his son, Terry Gordon Sumner of the home; granddaughter, Katie Sumner of Burlington; and two sisters, Mary Cook of Graham and Brenda Allred of Haw River. He was preceded in death by five brothers, Grant Sumner, Gerald Sumner, Grady Sumner, Conrad Sumner and Jeffrey Sumner and three sisters, Beverly Brown, Sally Ford and Diana Kay Laughlin.
The funeral service will be conducted at Salem United Methodist Church on Sunday, January 6, 2019 at 3:00 p.m. by Rev. Cindy Lister and Rev. Bennie Smith with the family receiving friends from 2:00 until 3:00 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Other times the family will be at the residence.
