Obituary

Glenda Grant Greene, 78, of Elon, N.C. died on Tuesday, September 20, 2022 at AuthoraCare Hospice Home after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.

A memorial service will be held at Rich & Thompson Funeral Home, 306 Glenwood Avenue, Burlington, NC on Sunday, October 9, 2022 at 3:00 PM with Rev. Edgar De Jesus and Rev. Sherry K. Grant. Visitation will be an hour prior to the service.

Glenda was born in High Point, N.C. to William Howard Grant and Thelma White Grant on January 6, 1944. The family moved to Burlington when Glenda was in the forth grade. She attended Hillcrest Elementary, Broad Street Junior High School, and graduated from Walter Williams High School in 1962. A member of the National Honor Society, she earned a full scholarship to Appalachian State Teachers College (Appalachian State University). After the birth of her two children, she entered Elon College (University) earning a BA degree in education. She was employed by Burlington City Schools for 22.5 years and taught at Cummings High School, Sellars-Gunn Middle School, but taught most of her career at Turrentine Middle School.

In her spare time Glenda enjoyed painting, restoring antique furniture, reading, and looking for bargains at yard sales and auctions. She had been an active member of the Burlington Women’s Club, worked with Literacy Committee of May Memorial Library, and volunteered at Alamance Regional Hospital. Until her illness, she was a proud member of “The Girls of 62” from Williams High School.

On November 22, 1986, she married Richard Greene of Graham. She joined Davis Street United Methodist Church, and she and Richard were active in worship and service; particularly with the Homemakers Sunday School Class.

Glenda is survived by her husband of the home. She is also survived by a son, Brian Hinshaw and wife Tricia of Canton, NC and granddaughters, Allison Hinshaw and Laney Hinshaw, and by daughter, Julie Sywassink and husband Chris of Savannah, Georgia and grandson, Crosby Sywassink and granddaughter Harper Sywassink. She is also survived by sister, Sherry K. Grant and husband Barry Mitchell of Sevierville, Tennessee; many nieces and nephews; sister-in-law, Alease Reams; and brother-in-law, Tom Myers.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Myra Loy; and special brother-in-law, Reggie Loy.

The family wants to thank the AuthoraCare Collective for their care of Glenda in her last days and to Always Best Care for providing additional care for the last ten months.
