Eugene Joseph Fitzgerald

Mr. Eugene Joseph “Gene” Fitzgerald passed away on Thursday, August 24, 2017 at Alamance Health Care after several years of declining health.  He was born in Brooklyn, NY to Frank and Mabel Fitzgerald, both deceased.  Gene was married to his wife Diane Slocum Robinson Fitzgerald for 16 years.

He was retired from New York Telephone Company, a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, where he enjoyed going to morning Mass. He was a Grand Knight with the Knights of Columbus.

In addition to his wife of the home, Mr. Fitzgerald is survived by five daughters, Maura Fitzgerald and her husband, Tom Steencken of Mt. Sidney, VA, Dona Huwer and her husband, Doug of Highland, MI, Cora Fitzgerald and her husband, Jim Hall of Port Jefferson Station, NY, Maria Fitzgerald of East Northport, NY and Karla Fitzgerald of Pawleys Island, SC; a step-daughter, Lisa Poe and Jay Smith of Gibsonville; a step-son, Jim Robinson and his wife, Anna of Gibsonville; fifteen grandchildren; five great grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and two brothers, Bill Fitzgerald and Bob Fitzgerald.  

Gene was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Virginia Fitzgerald; a daughter, Barbara Martin; a sister, Irene Romano; and a son-in-law, John Cornell.

A funeral mass will be co-officiated at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 30, 2017 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church by Father Briant Cullinane, OFM Conv. and Father Edward Burch.  Entombment will follow in the mausoleum at Alamance Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 12:00 p.m. to 12:45 p.m. prior to the service at the church.  Other times the family will be at the residence.
