Enola Harden Guthrie

Mrs. Enola Harden Guthrie, 87, of Graham, NC, passed away on Wednesday, March 8, 2023.

She was born in Durham, NC, on January 31, 1936, and then moved to Graham as a small child with her parents, Thomas and Madrid “Hazel” Harden, where she grew up in a house in the historic district on Main Street. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Graham and graduated from Graham High School in 1954. She loved everything about Graham and had a wealth of knowledge regarding the streets, the houses, and the people of the town.

Enola is survived by her three children; Jamie Jones (Glenn) of Wake Forest, Scott Guthrie of Haw River, and Dana Seelman (Kenny) of Haw River; grandson, Nolan Hurst; granddaughters, Ashley Bukay, Logan Seelman, and Mackenzie Seelman; great grandson Alex Bukay; brother Mike Harden (Donna) of Graham.

Other than her parents, Enola is preceded in death by her husband, Don Guthrie; and sister, Nancy Scott.

Enola retired as a library assistant from UNC after working in the manuscripts department of the Wilson Library for 18 years. In her retirement days, she enjoyed taking long rides in the country while listening to bluegrass and country music, reading, genealogy, crocheting and knitting. She made beautiful scarves, hats, and dish cloths, and gave many of these items away to her family and friends. After her husband, Don, passed away in 2018, she reluctantly left Graham and moved to the Oak Creek retirement community in Burlington, where she made countless friends. She always tried to have a sense of humor and as many would say “subtlety was not her middle name.”

A small graveside service with her family and friends will be conducted by the Rev. Chris Howe in the Linwood Cemetery in Graham on Saturday, March 18th, at 11:00 a.m.

Enola’s children would like to thank everyone for their love and support during this difficult time, and especially Charles and Ashley with AuthoraCare Hospice. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Baptist Church of Graham or Authoracare/Hospice of Burlington.
