E. Valeree Massey Byrd

E. Valeree Massey Byrd, age 84 of Burlington, NC, passed away peacefully on August 10, 2018 at her home in Burlington, NC.  A member of the Christian faith and a native of Burlington, Valeree is survived by her husband, Glenn Byrd, and preceded in death by her parents, William “Fee” Massey and Lillian “Lelia” Walker Massey.

Other survivors include her children and their spouses, Diane Hopkins and husband Gary, Gerald Byrd and wife Tracy of Morrisville, NC, Glea Haithcock and husband Stanley, Ronnie Byrd and wife Janet, Veronica Troxler and husband Jeff.  Grandchildren: Kevin Hopkins and wife Samantha, Stephen Hopkins, Miller Byrd and wife Elizabeth, Leanne Byrd, Leah Covington and husband Jordan, Abby Haithcock, Luke Haithcock, Jacob Haithcock, Blair Byrd, Zachary Byrd, Megan Byrd, Brooke Troxler, Grant Troxler and Valerie Troxler.  Step-Grandchild: Brandi Hopkins Qualls and husband Baron.  Great-Grandchildren: Penelope Hopkins, Jackson Covington and Sadie Covington.  Step-Great-Grandchildren: Jaden Qualls and Reagan Qualls.

Valeree is also preceded in death by her brothers: Wilbur Massey (infant), H. Vernon Massey and Daniel Massey.

Valeree graduated from Pleasant Grove High School in 1952 and earned an associate degree from Elon College in 1953.  She married Glenn, the one and only love of her life, on November 13, 1954.  Glenn and Valeree were blessed with over 63 years of marriage. 

In addition to being a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and homemaker, Valeree was co-owner of Alamance Carpet Mart, Inc. and worked alongside her husband in this family business for approximately thirty years.  After retiring from the family business, she often served as a daily caregiver to several of her grandchildren.
 

Valeree’s special personality and unique sense of humor will be greatly missed.  She cared and cooked for her family, providing a home her children and grandchildren always enjoyed.  Her love and warmth will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved her.  
 

Funeral services will be held at Lakeview Community Church on Monday, August 13, at 3:00 p.m. with the Rev. Gerald Sanders and Elder Zachary Byrd officiating.  A graveside service will be held afterwards at Bush Arbor Primitive Baptist Church.  The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Rich and Thompson Funeral Service in Burlington on Sunday, and at other times at their current residence.
