Donald “Don” Lee Guthrie, 78, of Graham, NC, passed away at his residence on Sunday, October 14th, 2018. Don was a Graham “Square Miler.” He was born on Market Street in Graham on May 8th, 1940, to Henry Claiborne and Hadassie Foster Guthrie, both deceased. As a member of Graham High School class of 1959, he excelled in all sports and was honored for his outstanding athletic ability at his induction to the Graham Sports Hall of Fame in 2013. Don served his country for ten years in the U.S. Army, was a Vietnam vet, and retired from the NC Department of Corrections.
In addition to his wife, Enola Harden Guthrie, survivors include two daughters; Jamie Guthrie Hurst of Wake Forest, and Dana Guthrie Seelman (Kenny) of Haw River; a son, Scott Harden Guthrie, of Haw River; grandson, Nolan Hurst; granddaughters, Ashley Hurst Bukay (Misha), Logan Seelman, and Mackenzie Seelman; great grandson, Alex Bukay; brother, David Guthrie; sisters, Velsie McAdams, and Carolyn Parish; and numerous nieces and nephews. Other than his parents, Don is preceded in death by three brothers; Desmond Foster, Claiborne Guthrie, and Gene Guthrie; three sisters, Zenna Ray Hunley, Martha Sue Warren, and Barbara Chester.
After retiring, Don enjoyed spending time with his family (most of all his grandchildren), golf outings with his buddies, classic movies, and various games of chance. The family would like to thank the Hospice nurses and staff, and all friends, especially Frank Morton, Art Gipple, and Bobby Carter.
Memorial service for family and friends will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, October 19th, 2018 at Rich & Thompson Chapel in Graham with Rev. Chris Howe officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:45 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. prior to the service and at other times will be at the residence. Interment will follow immediately after the service at Linwood cemetery in Graham. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Alamance-Caswell or the American Cancer Society.
