Daniel Gilbert “Marty” Martinez, 68, of Burlington died from liver cancer at his home on February 2, 2019, at 12:16PM, surrounded by his family.
Born May 30, 1950, in Chicago, Illinois, Marty was the son of Joseph R. Martinez and Edna M. Martinez, both deceased.
Marty attended schools in Chicago and enlisted in the army in 1967. He was an army paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division, and served with the 11th Armored Calvary Regiment, Blackhorse Division, in Vietnam in 1969. He was discharged in 1973.
In 1977, he moved to Burlington and attended Alamance Community College. He was owner and operator of Burlington Maintenance Service until 2002 when his health forced him to retire. He never turned down a request for help, was a kind, gentle spirit, and a friend to all.
Survivors include three sisters, Jacqueline Tansley of Schereville, Indiana, Barbara
Wisniewski of Chicago, Illinois; and Linda Badie of Burham, Illinois, and a brother, Thomas (Carol) Martinez of Tinley Park, Illinois; many cousins, nephews, and nieces in Chicago; friends and an extended family in Burlington.
In addition, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert James Martinez and William Henry Martinez.
The funeral service will be conducted at Rich and Thompson Funeral Home in Burlington on Wednesday, February 6, 2019 at 5:00 PM. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Afterwards, the body will be flown to Chicago for a memorial service, cremation and interment. Thornridge Funeral Home in Dolton, Illinois, is in charge of arrangements.
