Curtis Cruver Whittlesey, 96, of 1880 Brookwood Avenue, Burlington, passed away after a short illness at Alamance Regional Medical Center on December 24, 2020.
A native of Los Angeles, California, Curtis was one of two sons of Austin C. and Marie E. (Bachman) Whittlesey, and husband of the late Veda Whittlesey (Grey). He was a graduate of California Institute of Technology and a WW II veteran serving in the U.S. Navy. Curtis moved to Michigan in the late 1940’s to work for Fisher Body in their automotive design facility and ultimately headed the styling and modeling division at the GM Technical Center. He designed and built a custom home in Birmingham where he and Veda raised their family. They moved to Greensboro in the mid 1980’s where Curtis researched industrial battery technology with EDS. Later in his career, he worked as an engineer for Guilford County in addition to teaching at Guilford College. Curtis eventually retired and moved to The Village at Brookwood in 2010.
Curtis and Veda were very active, long time members of Christ Covenant Church where they both served as Elders. Curtis medaled in the 2019 North Carolina Senior Games for golf. He was also an avid sailor, outdoorsman and devoted husband and father.
He is survived by three sons, Mark A. Whittlesey and wife Jackie,
Grant C. Whittlesey, and Paul V. Whittlesey and wife Runae, five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He will be forever missed.
