Clarence W. Swinney, 92, of Highland Avenue transitioned to his heavenly home to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, October 13, 2017 at 10:14 p.m.
A native of Greensboro, NC, he was the husband of the late Katherine “Kitty” Swinney and the son of the late Rev. George W. Swinney and the late Etta Dalton Swinney. He was a lifelong member of Glen Hope Baptist Church and a veteran of the United States Air Force. Drafted at age 17, he was assigned to the Second Air Force and stationed in Clovis, NM. His three years in the Air Force were spent playing baseball in the Second Air Force League traveling the Southwestern United States. He attended a Yankees training camp and was chosen by Galax to play in the Blue Ridge League. A graduate of Elon College, he was an avid golfer and retired from Kayser Roth Corporation.
Survivors include his children, Charles Swinney (Kay) of Graham, Kathy Loy Sorrell (Rick) of Burlington; daughter-in-law, Terri Swinney of Lenoir City, TN; four grandchildren, Matt Swinney, Keith Swinney, Jr., David Swinney and Allison Loy; a great-grandson, Keith Swinney, III; sisters, Hazel Jarrett (Ralph) of Burlington and Yvonne Vanhoy of Greensboro; brother, Rev. Don Swinney (Jane) of Graham and special friends George and Diane Hill.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Deborah Gay Swinney; son, Keith Swinney; granddaughter, Jenna Ann Loy; sister, Irene Vaughn; and brother, Vernon Swinney.
The funeral service will be conducted at Glen Hope Baptist Church on Tuesday, October 17 at 12:00 noon by Pastor Don Swinney with the family receiving friends from 10:45 until 11:45 a.m. prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow in Alamance Memorial Park. At other times the family will be at his residence and the residence of his daughter Kathy Sorrell.
The family would like to thank his special caregivers, George Hill, Addie Atwater, Amelia Kigenyi and Lucinda Whitmore for taking such incredible care of him.
