Obituary

Carrie S. Thompson, 93, of Graham, passed away on February 25, 2021 surrounded by her family. She was born and raised in Saxapahaw, the daughter of Richard Alexander Stanford, Sr. and Zona Dodson Stanford. She was the wife of the late Russell K. Thompson, Sr. She attended Elon College, where she was a music major. Carrie worked for more than 30 years at Carolina Farm Credit, where she retired as Assistant Vice President of Administration. Carrie later worked for US Representative Robin Britt’s local office providing services to the citizens of Alamance County. She served a delegate to the 1984 National Democratic Convention. Always interested in political activities, Carrie was active in the Alamance County Democratic Party and the Democratic Women’s Organization, serving in several capacities. Carrie was elected as the first female council member for the City of Graham, serving from 1989-1995 and 2004-2005. Long recognized as a civic leader in Alamance County, she served numerous organizations including the Women’s Division of the Alamance County Chamber of Commerce, Alamance County Board of Social Services, Alamance County Library Committee and Graham Historical Society. Carrie was an advocate of equal rights for women and fought to get the Equal Rights Amendment passed in North Carolina.

Carrie was an avid reader, enjoyed history and loved to travel to other countries. She was a member of the Leornian Study Club for more than 50 years. She was a member of Graham Presbyterian Church, serving as an Elder and on other committees, and received the Presbyterian Women Life Membership. While growing up in Saxapahaw, Carrie was an active member of Saxapahaw United Methodist Church. One of Carrie’s joys was spending time at the family lake house and watching her grandchildren play in the water.

Survivors include daughter, Caroline T. Davis and husband Kent of Graham; son, Russell K. Thompson, Jr. and wife Karen of Wilmington; grandchildren Kristen D. Yount, Kimberly D. Fisher (Brandon), Adam H. Thompson (Lauren), Sara Kathryn Gazda (Ben); great-grandchildren Baylee Fisher, Abby Yount, Nick Yount, Alex Yount and William Russell Thompson. Also surviving are her sister, Nancy S. Bare and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Richard A. Stanford, Jr.

Services will be held at a later date.

Mrs.Thompson will be available for public viewing, Monday, March 1, 2021 from 9:00 AM until 5:00 PM at Rich and Thompson Funeral Service in Graham.
