Carrie Genaway. 93, of Newnan, Georgia, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 14, 2019.
Carrie was born on March 14, 1926 in Norlina, NC to Eugene and Mary Mize, their only child.
She was married to Frederick Emmett Genaway, a WWII Navy veteran. They lived in Massena, NY, where Fred was from and where they met. They raised 5 children and had been married for 68 years before his death in 2016.
As a young woman, Carrie left college and moved to New York State to pursue a career as a professional singer. She had the opportunity to sign with a 40’s Band but decided to marry and start a family instead. While in Massena she stayed active in First UMC. Her passion for singing kept her in the church choir and community chorus, often being the soloist. She and Fred were active square dancers. She remembered trying to learn to ice skate using a chair to hold on to as she skated. It was her first and last time on a pair of ice skates. She stayed in Massena for 32 years before moving back to Burlington, North Carolina to be near her mother (and to get out of the cold.)
For 38 years Carrie and Fred were active in their church, Front Street UMC, in Burlington. She sang in the choir and was a faithful member of their Sunday school class and the Alamance Chorale. She ended her career working for a small country Methodist church where she was secretary for 22 years.
Carrie had a passion for sewing, owning a fabric store in the 1960’s, sewing clothes for customers and the family, and sewing stuffed clowns that she sold at craft shows - Carrie’s Clowns.
In 2014 Carrie and Fred moved to Newnan, Georgia. They joined Newnan First UMC and became members of the Henry Kitchens Sunday school class.
Being in church, as a member and as an active participant was most important to Carrie. She was a faithful witness to Christ’s love.
She is predeceased by her husband, her parents, her youngest son, Kyle Genaway, and many aunts and uncles.
She is survived by her 4 other children: Stephen (Charlene) Genaway of Winston Salem, NC; Chris (Vicki) Genaway of High point, NC; Kevin (Dianna) Genaway of Hickory, NC; and Karen (Greg) Oothoudt of Newnan, GA; and Carrie Genaway (Kyle’s wife) of Albany, NY; 13 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 18, in the Heritage Center of Front Street UMC followed by the Funeral service at 2:00 in the sanctuary.
Condolences may be sent to the family c/o Karen Oothoudt, 315 Woodstream Dr, Newnan, GA
