Brenda Faye Porter, 70, passed away at Duke University Hospital on Friday, April 9, 2021.
She was a native of Alamance County, and the daughter of Ernest Raymond Porter, Jr. and Margie Jarvis Porter, both deceased.
Brenda graduated from Graham High School Class of 1968. She graduated from Appalachian State University Class of 1972. She obtained her master’s degree from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Brenda’s warmth and kindness allowed her to touch the lives of everyone that she met in both her personal and professional life. She devoted her professional path to various human service roles, impacting thousands of people in Alamance and surrounding Counties throughout her career.
Brenda was a teacher at Myrtle Beach Air Force Base also coaching softball and basketball. After moving back to Alamance County, she continued coaching locally while contributing to the lives of many young girls.
Brenda worked with local Senior Citizens while employed with the Alamance County Recreation Department. She planned various events including arts and crafts along with fun local and overnight trips. She was also very involved with Special Olympics. She was instrumental in the grant writing process to start Cedar Rock Park.
Brenda was responsible for the operation of three group homes while working at Ralph Scott Life Services. Her relentless involvement with individual clients and their families, while working closely with medical providers, touched many lives.
Brenda’s love and compassion for the elderly resulted in her being selected as the founding Program Director for Alamance Eldercare. She devoted her life to the success of this non-profit organization. She worked with clients and their families, local churches, local businesses and with community leaders. An annual breakfast meeting and the infamous annual “Super Bowl” became cornerstone fundraisers for Alamance Eldercare. She continued utilizing her grant writing expertise to help fund local needs.
Brenda enjoyed her special group of friends that were considered “The Birthday Girls” and they would celebrate each other on their birthdays.
Brenda will be missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her beloved nephew, Brian Porter and his wife Kimberly and their daughter, Tonya all of Burlington; two sisters, Jill Porter Bullis and her husband Byron and their children, Alex and Bricen all of Graham and Vickey Klotz and her husband Matt of Liberty and a brother, Ronnie Porter of Burlington. She was preceded in death by a brother, Steven Jay Porter.
The memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, April 17, 2021 at the Rich & Thompson Chapel in Graham. The family will receive friends following the service. The family request that if you choose to attend the service, please wear a face mask.
In honor of Alex, Bricen and Tonya, memorials may be made to Children’s Home Society of NC, 604 Meadow Street, Greensboro, NC 27405, which was near and dear to Brenda’s heart.
