Betty Jane “Betsy” (Foster) Webster

Obituary

Betty Jane “Betsy” (Foster) Webster, 93, passed into God’s presence peacefully in her Clemmons home surrounded by family and hospice staff on June 14, 2023.

A native of Caswell County, Betsy was the wife of Robert N. Webster whom she married in 1952. During their 47 years of marriage, they lived in Mebane, NC and were active members of Hawfield’s Presbyterian Church and the Hawfield’s Civitan Club. Betsy was retired from Wachovia Bank where she worked for 28 years as a teller and human resource officer. From 2000 – 2022, she resided with her daughter’s family in Orlando, FL. There she was an active member of the Presbyterian Church of the Lakes (deacon) and officer in P.E.O., a national philanthropic organization supporting women’s educational advancement.

Betsy was the daughter of the late Ernest Osber and Isabella Poteat Foster of Yanceyville, NC. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters: James E. Foster (Kay Zimmerman – deceased), Richard Malloy Foster (Mabel Guthrie-living), Lindsay Tilden Foster (Barbara Hedrick-deceased, Barbara “Cookie” Daniel-living), Marion Duke Foster (Maxine Bush-living), Lillie Ann Foster Vernon (Fred-deceased), and Doris Foster Norwood (Pete-deceased).

Betsy is survived by a son, David Webster (Paula), of Winston-Salem, and daughter, Jane Shugart (Sandy) of Clemmons. She had six grandchildren: Eliza (Ryan) Cheek, Geoffrey (Allison) Webster , Kate (Chris) Schell, Hannah (Jordan) Busekrus, Sophie Shugart, and Curtis Shugart. She also had two great-grandchildren, Morgan and Reinhold. Other survivors include her sister-in-law, Pat Webster, and numerous nieces and nephews who loved her.

A faithful follower of Christ, Betsy was known for her caring friendship, compassionate and generous heart, selfless service for others, good humor, and Southern graciousness. She was an avid reader, crossword puzzler, college basketball fan (Tarheels), lover of all things Christmas, and displayed an impeccable sense of fashion. But primarily, she was devoted to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She took great pleasure in providing them with their favorite comfort foods, words of encouragement, funny “MeMa” sayings, and a little extra spending money as needed.

Betsy was a true Southern lady who will be dearly missed by all who knew her. May she enjoy peaceful rest until the resurrection on the last day when all God’s family will join her at the banquet of our Lord and King.

A graveside service will be held at Hawfield’s Presbyterian Church in Mebane, NC at 11:15 AM on Saturday, August 5 with a celebration of life gathering for family afterwards in the church fellowship hall. For those wishing to honor Betsy’s legacy, memorials can be made to Mountain Valley Hospice, 3069 Trenwest Dr., Winston-Salem, NC 27103 or to Presbyterian Church of the Lakes, 4700 Lincoln Ave., Orlando, FL 32819.
